Can you have laser hair removal with tanned skin?
Technically, yes there are lasers that are capable of treating tanned skin. These are the same lasers that are used to treat darker skin types. However, if you want an effective and comfortable laser hair removal treatment you need to be as close to your natural skin coloring as possible. The pigment that builds up as your skin gets tan is the same pigment in your hair that is being targeted by the laser. So, the more tan you have, the more your skin becomes a target. Because of this, your settings will have to be lowered to prevent burning your skin. Obviously, this results in a less than optimal or more uncomfortable treatment. If you want good quick cost-effective results you need to choose between being hair free or tan during the process.
Do I have to have a consultation?
Yes, you must have a consultation prior to being treated. We need to make sure there are no issues that would prevent us from safely treating you. Your safety is our number one priority.
Is it possible to be burned or have permanent scarring from the laser?
Yes, these are potential adverse side effects of laser hair removal. This is why it is important to use a reputable provider and experienced technicians. Most burns are caused from inexperienced technicians, sun or tanning bed exposure two weeks before or after treatments, light sensitive medications and skin care products that contain certain acids. Experiencing hyper pigmentation or hypo pigmentation are temporary side effects that could happen. Communicating honestly with your technician and notifying them of any changes in medication or skin care products will ensure that you have a safe treatment with excellent results.
How do I know I am a candidate for laser hair removal?
You would NOT be a candidate if you are currently pregnant, not willing to give up sun or tanning bed exposure for the duration of your treatments, are on light sensitive medications, have a history of keloid scarring or seizures, if you have metal implants in the area to be treated or if you have light colored hair.
Will I see immediate results with laser hair removal?
Between treatments you will notice the hair that is growing back to be finer and possibly a little bit lighter. You will also notice the hair that has not been killed yet will be stunted, therefore causing less shaving and trimming time in between treatments. If you suffer from razor burn or ingrown hairs, you will also notice a decrease throughout the duration of your treatments.
Do I need to grow the hair out before a treatment?
No, the area needs to be shaved or trimmed. It is best to have a little bit of stubble. We recommend shaving or trimming a day or two before a treatment. You can not wax, tweeze or thread the area in between treatments.
Does laser hair removal work on light colored hair?
It only works on light brown to black hair. It will NOT work on blonde, gray, white, most shades of red or peach fuzz.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Everyone has a different tolerance for pain. Most people find it to be very fast and tolerable and numbing cream is usually unnecessary. Limiting sun and tanning bed exposure during the process will help make the treatments more comfortable.
How many treatments will I need for laser hair removal?
On average it takes 5-7 treatments to be 75-98% complete. Everyone reacts to the laser differently. Some people respond faster than others. Skin color, hair color and density, hormonal imbalances, as well as the area of the body can make a difference in how many treatments are needed.
Can I have laser hair removal treatments while I am pregnant?
No, while there is no potential harm from having the procedure done during pregnancy, we choose not to treat during pregnancy. During pregnancy, a womans hormones are going through major changes. While these changes are going on the treatments are typically very ineffective.
