Myofascial Release Is Life Changing

Myofascial

Because Myofascial Release Therapy is something that most people haven’t heard of, let’s take a look at some frequently asked questions. Here’s what you need to know.

What is the fascia?

In order to understand Myofascial Release Therapy, you first must understand the fascia, which is a connective, web-like tissue
that supports our entire body. It doesn’t show up on x-rays or MRIs, and it runs from the top of our head to the bottom of our myofascialfeet without interruption. The fascia should be fluid-like and easily alter itself through changes in our body. Due to trauma, inflammation, disease, and repetitive strain, the fascia solidifies which results in pressure on nerves and muscles and overall accentuated pain. Once our bodies begin to develop these restrictions, they pull our body out of balance and our posture in everyday activities becomes compromised. We begin to brace ourselves or use compensatory strategies to function. This begins the cycle that often continues throughout life.

How is Myofascial Release Therapy different from other massages?

Other types of therapy focus on muscles and bones that make up about 20 percent of our tissue. Fascia makes up the remaining 80 percent of our bodies (and surrounds all muscles, bones, organs). Myofascial Release Therapy works with the body to assist it in releasing adhesions, instead of forcing it. Lotions and oils are not used in this therapy, whereas they are with most other types of massage. Myofascial Release Therapy uses sustained, gentle pressure, while most other types of massage therapy use fluid, sweeping motions.

What does Myofascial Release Therapy feel like?

Myofascial Release Therapy is based on gentle, sustained pressure. Your practitioner is in tune to what your body needs and what your tolerance is. When pressure is applied, you might feel warmth or a sense of stretching, like taffy being pulled. As tissue releases, some people experience an easing of pain and a softening of tightness. After a session, you might be a little sore, but it will most likely come with a reduction of symptoms.

How does Myofascial Release Therapy work if it’s so gentle?

“No pain, no gain” does NOT apply here. The John Barnes’ Myofascial Release Approach allows the body to correct itself naturally, without being forced. Releasing adhesions with sustained pressure allows muscles to relax.

What symptoms can Myofascial Release Therapy treat?

Myofascial Release Therapy may provide relief from symptoms such as:

  • Back pain
  • Sprains and strains
  • Poor posture
  • Body stiffness, aches or pains
  • Muscle pain, weakness and tension
  • Restricted movements
  • Poor mobility
  • Tenderness
  • Pain and tightness of the pelvic & abdominal areas
